The Qualité Awards Dinner of the 2020 South African Dairy Championships has been cancelled due to the national ban on gatherings of more than 100 people. The prestigious annual awards event of the SA dairy industry was to be held in the Stellenbosch Town Hall on Thursday 26 March 2020.
The Council of Agri-Expo, the organiser of the Qualité Awards dinner, has consulted widely with provincial government and other stakeholders over the past week in the face of growing concerns about the COVID-19 pandemic. Johan Ehlers, Chief Executive Officer of Agri-Expo, thanked the championships partners and participants for their understanding. “The championships is the largest dairy competition in Africa made possible in partnership with Synercore, Lake Foods, Condio, Orchem, Guth SA, Woolworths, MANE, the South African Society for Dairy Technology, the Milk Producers Organisation (MPO) and The Dairy Mail.”
According to Ehlers, the cancellation of the event does not put a damper on the fact that a record number of 975 dairy products competed this year in the 187th anniversary of the championships. “This large number of entries by 74 manufacturers in more than 100 different classes is still good news for the dairy industry, which is being hampered by challenges such as the ongoing drought and now also the corona virus.”
This year’s winners will be announced in the media and on social media on Thursday 26 March 2020. For more information, visit www.cheesesa.co.za, or contact Agri-Expo on 021 975 4440 or e-mail us.
* Agri-Expo also cancelled the South African Cheese Festival, which was to be held for the 19th time from Saturday 25 to Monday 27 April 2020 at Sandringham outside Stellenbosch.
